I winter every year. How else would I make it through the other 3 seasons if I didn't rest in January and February? Weekends are blissfully devoid of plans. The only intention is time on my couch watching the fire in the fireplace, some mindless football on the tv. March is more difficult with the high holy days of St. Patrick's Day looming mid-month.
I never made a resolution on a prescribed date. You're absolutely right, January would be my last choice. I make resolutions when they are needed. They are completely personal and I would never share them over cocktails.
Wintering, yes I have. It's been the best for my energy to just turn off and rest.
Loved your comment 'more a blood oath than a resolution'. I laughed out loud and agreed 100%
The subject of rest is a giant one in our house right now. My husband is desperately pushing me to rest and not treat everything as urgent. As the primary (only) salary in our house, and as someone with that control thing, I’m resisting the way our dog resisted being crated for a nine-hour flight—viscerally. Regardless if the fact that the crate is bigger than I need, and there are nice toys in there.
Two songs popped into my head as I read your words … since you know I love books, but I breathe with music and lyrics… both songs are by Alainis Morrisette. “Losing the Plot” and “Reasons I Drink.” Taken together I think they summarize my resistance to the wintering I know I do dearly need.
We do condition ourselves to live in urgent mode, don't we? I understand the added concern of being the primary salary, that's a lot to contend with and all the more reason to rest! You know, put your oxygen mask on first so you can help others?
Thanks for the song mentions, they'll be on repeat today! They are very telling! Now go rest this weekend, at least a little!
I'm one of those odd ducks that needs a lot of sleep, in winter it is easily 8 hours a night. I sometimes joke that I really am powered by the sun. I don't test very well other than that, though. I have trouble sorting down and just being. But you're right, what am I running from?

That's living right Maureen! One should always be well rested ahead of St. Patrick's Day!
Knowing Maureen she dives right in head first. She does very little in half measure!

Yes! Thank you! We are supposed to regroup now!
I have very strong opinions about reality tv!
